Did You Know? By joining the Stand To Project, Veterans can access a wide range of supportive and engaging opportunities—including weekly MESS (Mutual Engagement & Support Sessions).
MESS groups are structured peer support sessions designed to promote wellbeing, connection, and recovery among Veterans. Each session typically lasts around two hours and offers a safe, welcoming space to:
- Share experiences
- Build confidence
- Take part in meaningful activities
- Hear from guest speakers
- Engage in relapse prevention work (where appropriate)
Group sizes vary depending on the needs and confidence levels of those attending, ensuring there’s a space that feels right for everyone.
MESS groups take place weekly at four fixed locations across Derbyshire:
- Swadlincote
- Chesterfield
- Buxton
- and Glossop
Posters with session times and venue details can be found below!

About Stand To – Veteran Led Recovery Connections
STAND TO is a veteran-focused support service run by experienced staff, many with military backgrounds, who understand the unique challenges faced by ex-armed forces personnel and their families—especially around alcohol and substance misuse. They offer:
- Veteran-to-veteran support – confidential, understanding help from people who’ve been there.
- Befriending services – regular check-ins, chats, and companionship to reduce isolation.
- Recovery activities – from gentle walks and coffee meetups to more adventurous options like water sports and archery.
- MESS groups (Mutual Ex-Service Support) – peer-led support groups held across Derbyshire to encourage connection and shared recovery.
- Social and physical wellbeing events – designed to boost confidence, build friendships, and support long-term recovery.
Chris, the Veteran Recovery Link Worker and volunteers are there to help at every stage of recovery.
👉 STAND TO now offers: Recovery for All events—open to anyone in recovery, veteran or not.
