It’s Alcohol Awareness Week 2025 and We Need Your Help!

|

It’s Alcohol Awareness Week, running from 7-13 July 2025

Alcohol Awareness Week is the perfect time to start conversations, raise awareness, and promote positive change around alcohol use — and we need your help to make a difference in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire continues to experience higher rates of alcohol-related deaths and hospital admissions than many other parts of England. Alcohol is linked to over 200 health conditions and puts pressure on our NHS, social care, and emergency services. It’s also a major cause of unplanned time off work.

But even small changes can lead to big improvements, here are some of the commonly reported benefits from cutting down on Alcohol:
🎉Improved energy levels,
🎉Better sleep
🎉Improvement in mental health and sense of wellbeing (alcohol is known to both cause and worsen anxiety and depression)
🎉Find it easier to lose weight
🎉Report a better sex life and have less relationship problems
🎉Avoid problems at work
🎉Reduction in common health problems like high blood pressure, liver disease, and cancer risk
🎉Reduced risk of accidents – did you know you are much more likely to be the victim of an accident after drinking
🎉Have more money to spend on other things

Hence the creation of the Alcohol Scratch Cards — designed by Derbyshire County Council’s Public Health Substance Use Team to help people reflect on their drinking, understand alcohol units, and find support if needed. They’re a small tool with the potential to make a big impact.

How you can help:

If you run a community group, manage a workplace, support a local club, or just want to help friends and neighbours — we’d love for you to take a few scratch cards and place them somewhere people can pick them up. Think noticeboards, staff rooms, reception desks, or community centres!

Many people also take a card home for a loved one — and that’s something we fully support.

To request a supply of scratch cards, just email us at:
📧 ASCH.PublicHealthSubstanceUseTeam@derbyshire.gov.uk
Please include your postal address and how many cards you’d like.

Together, during Alcohol Awareness Week and beyond, we can help more people make informed choices about alcohol — and reduce harm across Derbyshire.
