What is a Lived Experience Recovery Organisation?

A Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO) is a community-led group run by people with lived experiences of addiction and recovery. Built on principles of peer support, mutual aid, and community empowerment, LEROs offer hope and a sense of belonging. They provide flexible support, advocacy, and opportunities for connection, hobbies, and volunteering, aiming to lift entire communities and make recovery visible and inspiring. LEROs work alongside existing services, filling gaps and responding to local needs without judgment or strict rules. They create a “social contagion of hope,” helping individuals rebuild their lives through community engagement and support.
