Pathways of Chesterfield – In Their Own Words, Art and Christmas Cheer!

Paths to Recovery: Giving Back and Growing Together

At Pathways, our recovery groups have always been about more than just activities, they’re about connection, confidence, and community. Over time, a real sense of belonging has blossomed among the people who come through our doors. You can see it in the small moments that make a big difference: someone offering to wash the dishes after a session, group members encouraging each other, or someone stepping forward to help lead an activity for the first time.

There’s a beautiful culture of giving back, of wanting to support others and to show appreciation for the help and kindness that’s been received along the way. This spirit really came to life recently through one of our creative projects.

Art, Confidence, and Christmas Cheer

This quarter, our recovery art group took on a special task: designing the Christmas cards we send to our supporters, partner agencies, and funders. The cards are also sold to raise money for future group activities, helping to keep our creative community thriving.

The group poured heart and soul into developing their designs. At first, we weren’t sure whether to create one collaborative card or several different ones. In the end, we chose four unique designs, each with its own story and personality.

One of the most uplifting moments came when we selected a design created by someone who had joined the art group saying they “couldn’t draw or paint,” but wanted to fill their time and try something new. Seeing their artwork chosen for the final cards, and knowing it would help raise funds to support others, was a moment of immense pride and joy.

More Than Art—A Journey of Recovery

Moments like these remind us what recovery is really about. It’s not just about overcoming challenges, it’s about rediscovering self-worth, finding community, and realising that your contribution matters. Watching people grow in confidence, creativity, and compassion is what makes our work so meaningful.

At Pathways, we believe recovery thrives in community, and our art group’s Christmas card project is just one of many ways people are giving back, lifting each other up, and creating something beautiful together.”

About the Project – Pathways to Recovery

Throughout its work, Pathways supports people at all different stages of their recovery journey. The aim is to offer more to help people start their journey and make it more possible. Trying to make changes is always daunting, and even more so if you are homeless.

No matter where someone is in their recovery journey, there is something in the Pathways to Recovery project for them.
